Pioneers of
flight
Flight means to fly like a bird
in the infinite blue sky. Flight has fascinated mankind for centuries and
numerous flying machine have been designed and countless unsuccessful attempts.
Before the Wright brothers some successful attempts were made.
The first successful flight was made in
balloon in 1783 by the French Montgolfier brothers, they flew over Paris.
The next major advance was the development of
gliders, notably by the Englishman Sir George Cayley, who in 1845 designed the
first glider to make a sustained flight.
Otto Lil ienthal, a German became the world first pilot because he
managed to achieve controlled flight. However, powered flight did not become
practical possibility until the invention of light-weight, petrol driven
internal combustion.
Then in 1903, the American Wright
brothers Orville and Wilbur Wright made the first powered flight in their
plane, four Cylinder, Petrol - driven engine. Aircraft design advanced rapidly
and in 1909 the Frenchman Louis Bleriot made his pioneering flight across the
English channel.
